Tasha’s Sparkliest Activity: Magical Coloring Wand!

Tasha, Sam, and their friends had so much fun using their magical wands and their imaginations to make the world around them more colorful. Did you know that you can make your very own magical coloring wand? Just like the characters in The Biggest Gift of All, you can create beautiful drawings, colors, and fun, too!

It will take about 40 minutes in total to make your awesome wand. It is best to have a parent or guardian with you to help you if you need it. They can even make their own wand, too!

Materials:

  • Paper towel tube
  • Acrylic paints, markers, or colored pencils (any color you want!)
  • Paper plate
  • Streamers, ribbons, long string, or paper strips
  • Tape or glue (optional)
  • Paintbrush or sponge (optional)
  • Decorations, such as:
    • Stickers
    • String
    • Pom-poms
    • Beads or charms
    • Pipe cleaners
    • Stamps
    • Tissue paper

Before you start:

Change into some clothes you don’t mind getting dirty. Then, pick an open space to craft at. Make sure you have large newspapers, paper, or even trash bags under the supplies so you can keep your surface clean.

Step 1: Get your supplies!

Start with a paper towel tube (check your recycling bin or ask a parent or guardian for help).

Step 2: Now you’re ready to paint or color!

Using markers or colored pencils, pick your favorite colors and color all over the paper towel tube. If you want to use paint, pour a little bit onto the paper plate; use a paintbrush, sponge, or even your fingers to cover the tube. You can get creative and make a rainbow, polka-dots, or even smiley faces. What happens when you mix two colors? Can you blend any together to make something new? Have fun making new colors and designs!

Step 3: Let the paint dry.

This will take at least 10 minutes. Make sure to clean up everything to clear some space for the next steps!

Step 4: Add accessories!

Let’s add some accessories to help our wands fly through the air! Take some streamers, ribbons, long strings, or paper strips, and cut ten pieces that are half the length of the tube. Using tape, attach two pieces at a time to one side of the tube. Now your wand can color the world around you even better!

Step 5: If you want to add more sparkle, decorate your wand!

Now that the paint has dried and we have put some fun attachments on the wand, it’s time to decorate! Use the liquid glue to put on as many googly eyes, pom-poms, or any other decoration you want on your new creation! Sam and Tasha always add as many colorful items as they can, but this is your wand to decorate how you love!

Step 6: Let the glue dry for 10 more minutes.

You can put all of your supplies away and clean up your space. While you wait for your wand to be complete, open your copy of The Biggest Gift of All and look for all the yellow colors on page 2. Can you find things that are yellow in your room? Now look for all the purple things on page 14. Do you know what colors make purple?

Step 7: All done!

Now you’re ready to play with your brand new wand!

Your new magical coloring wand looks beautiful! We hope you had the best time creating your very own! Use your imagination just like Tasha and Sam, and go paint your neighborhood into vibrant colors: What color will the trees be? What about the sky? You can blend the colors yellow and blue to make green. White and red make pink. Will you make the grass green or another fun color? The world can look however you want it to!

If you and your parent or guardian have the supplies, time, and energy to keep crafting, you can use your extra googly eyes, paint, and decorations to create your own rock pet as well! (hyperlink)
